Production supervisors are most commonly found in industrial and manufacturing facilities with the general job responsibility of supervising a specific division or managing the entire plant operations. Duties include ensuring supplies and materials are in a positive flow and that all equipment is functional and adhere to safety standards. A production supervisor may progress into a managerial or executive role depending on the industry and company.
Almost all companies require production supervisors to hold a bachelor's degree in business administration or a related field. Additional certification obtained by the Association for Operations Management is greatly valued along with a preference for prior experience working in a supervisory role in a production facility. As liaising between different departments and suppliers is a good portion of the job, strong communication skills are a must in order to ensure all deadlines are met. Other valuable skills include exceptional management, analytical, negotiation, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
