Summary
The Honing Operator is responsible for setting up and operating honing equipment to accurately finish internal and external metal surfaces of components to specified dimensions and tolerances. The operator interprets job specifications, including dimensions, tolerances, and instructions, using company documentation such as job travellers. In addition to production responsibilities, the Honing Operator supports the development of team capability by training other employees to operate safely and effectively honing equipment, contributing to overall operational excellence.

Job Responsibilities and Duties
- Meet production schedules and timelines to deliver products on schedule.
- Be aware of and execute relevant policies, procedures, and tools related to quality, environmental, and health and safety.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations, including proper handling and disposal of waste products into appropriate environmental disposal containers.
- Read and interpret drawings, manuals, specifications or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, tools to be used, materials for the job and setup requirements.
- Communicate with lead hand and other personnel for assignments and to resolve quality issues.
- Set up honing machine as required by specifications.
- Operates honing machine to hone internal or external surfaces of cylinders to specifications.
- Document actions in support of quality and communicate all discrepancies to lead hand.
- Moves controls to adjust feed rate, spindle speed, length of stroke and depth.
- Measures finished workpiece with instruments to ensure conformance.
- Performs preventative and regular maintenance on machine.
- Train other personnel within Honing department or other RHK employees.
- Complete required documentation.
- Lifts workpiece manually or with an overhead crane and secures it appropriately.
- Keep up to date with industry standards and practices.
- Work in a safe, team-oriented environment and participate as an active member of the implementation and execution of ‘Lean’ principles.
- Maintain company standards and conform to the requirements of the Quality Management System.
- Participates regularly and actively in all aspects of the health and safety program including but not limited to safe work practices, habits, industrial hygiene and good housekeeping.
- Other tasks as required.
Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Post secondary education in industrial technologies, hydraulic systems, mechanics, millwright or electronics considered an asset.
- 3+ years honing experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
- Positive attitude with ability to ensure compliance with all quality, environmental, and health and safety policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
- Strong communication skills, both verbally and written.
- Strong work ethic and positive team attitude with the ability to work independently with little supervision.
- Intermediate knowledge of reading and interpreting drawings and specifications in support of quality requirements.
- Ability to determine the kind of tools and equipment required to do the job.
- Demonstrated ability to operate an overhead crane in a safe manner.
- Must be adaptable to changing work environment, competing demands and is able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
- Have a positive team-oriented attitude, strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Shift - Day 6:00AM - 2:15PM (must also be willing to work occasional afternoons based on operational demands.
