A produce clerk is responsible for ensuring that the grocery store is maintained in a clean, safe and appealing state to its customers. Duties of this position include organizing items on shelves, removing expired products from displays, assisting customers in their daily shopping needs and bagging customer purchases. Depending on the company, a produce clerk may progress into a managerial or role even in the absence of holding a bachelor's degree.
A high school diploma or equivalent is often required by most companies to be a produce clerk. Basic knowledge and understanding of produce and grocery items are desired and candidates who perform well in this position have excellent customer service skills and are friendly and approachable. Due to the nature of the work, a produce clerk must be able to stand and walk around for longs hours at a time and must be able to move, lift and carry a minimum of 40lbs.
