      English and Humanities Tutor Interview

      Application

I interviewed at Tutor Doctor (Morristown, NJ)

      Interview

I had applied online for the English & Humanities Tutor position. I offered full availability, flexibility, enthusiasm, and a Bachelor's degree in English Literature. I was contacted by a recruiter during a time when I disclosed I would be at my current job, but I ran on break to take the call anyway because I was worried about a continuing game of phone tag. The interviewer asked why I was interested in teaching multiple times over, and where I saw my future going. I find this very strange, as a lot of tutoring companies hire high school and college students that are expected to be temporary employees. That aside, I said I was perfectly fine with and interested in temporary gig work but that I was also willing to work with the maximum amount of hours they could offer me. The interviewer then went on to say that they had no place or interest for English focused studies because they need tutors "for the SATs/ACTs"... Forgive me if I'm wrong, but A. This is the subject I applied for, B. Standardized tests include English sections, and C. Tutors are sought out throughout the year, not just for SAT prep. I felt that my time was disrespected, and I have to suspect whether I was being judged for having a retail position at my ripe age (late 20s). I am looking for experience. It is a shame that a company that focuses on education may not understand that the job market is abysmal and that if every position hires with years of experience, more and more individuals like myself will be stuck in retail positions indefinitely. Overall, it was a disorganized and disappointing interview process.
