Pros

Benefits are good. Pension contribution matching can grow savings quickly if you maximize your contributions. USED to be a really fantastic company to work for. There used to be very good opportunities for growth and moving into new roles.

Cons

Unfortunately the company has implemented a strategy of hiring senior leaders (past and present) that are great at petty politics, but seemingly know nothing about how to lead people. There used to be a culture of helping and educating leaders be good leaders, but this appears to have been eliminated. Currently, it is more about what people say vs. what they can actually accomplish.

Fake culture of caring about employees

Pros

ATB will act like you are part of their “family” until they do stone cold mass layoffs. It starts of with your manager avoiding you, then requesting a short notice out of the blue meeting. Next thing you know you’re asked if you received an email with your package and that your account access will be cut off immediately. If ATB just treated their employees as employees this might be acceptable, but the fake culture of caring about you, makes it harsh to just cut you off. ATB has laid off hundreds of employees under the notion of “elimination positions” but then promotes externally and internally that they retrain their people.

Cons

Many low quality leaders Executives who take 20% pay raises and then tell employees they will continue the 7 year pay freeze again

Used to be a great place to work—until leadership fumbled everything

Pros

✔ Great colleagues & teamwork – Many talented and supportive coworkers, especially in UX and dev teams. ✔ Good benefits & work-life balance – Before the layoffs, WFH flexibility and work-life balance were decent. ✔ Decent pay (if you negotiate well) – Compensation was fair, but if you stay too long without negotiating, you’ll fall behind. ✔ Innovative tech choices (but poorly executed) – The move to React and modern stacks was promising, but mismanaged.

Cons

❌ Mass layoffs with no transparency – ATB gutted entire teams suddenly (UX & leadership included), leaving employees blindsided. ❌ Chaotic tech strategy – No standardized design system, inconsistent tech stacks (Material UI? AntD? Bootstrap? Pick one!), and lack of leadership in execution. ❌ Reactive leadership, not proactive – Management ignores warning signs until it's too late, then rushes bad decisions. ❌ Reorgs every few years = zero job security – If you’re not in a revenue-generating role, your job could be cut at any time. ❌ Career growth is limited – ATB focuses more on internal politics than actual talent. Promotions are rare unless you’re part of the “in” crowd.
