Pros

- Stable industry and company - Decent salary and benefits for a non oil & gas company - Good hard working people

Cons

NOTE: There's a reason why you always see so many CP Rail postings. It's not because the company is growing. It's because employees are leaving. - Organizational decisions are being made by senior management without any understanding or care for the actual work being done or the impact it has on their employees - Employees are overworked with ever increasing demands, with no support from management. It's a "just get it done" mentality. - Work life balance is not valued in this company - Many demands from senior management. Many of which don't actually add value to the company.

Pros

Might be OK if you're in the union or a contractor.

Cons

CP has the most oppressive work culture I have ever seen. Everyone seems to live in constant fear of being fired. A recent, 2017 employee survey revealed that 82% of CP employees "...would leave the company if offered a job with similar pay elsewhere". I dare you to ask about that in a CP interview and see if you get a straight answer. IT is a sweatshop meaning that work/life balance is non-existent. If you work on-call, you get no compensation for it except $25 total per night and only if you get called between certain hours. There's no overtime in IT as it is non-union. Many IT employees, especially in the area I was in, are expected to work well beyond 40 hours/week and 50-60 hour work weeks are very common. You will get abused or threatened by managers who don't know the meaning of respectful workplace.

Pros

They offer excellent wages, a great Pension and Benefits package. There is a fitness facility on sight at the head office.

Cons

In the never ending quest to increase profit margins/share prices, increase train speed, minimize inefficiencies, workloads have quadrupled. In a safety critical position such as this one, the daily demands are far too taxing on the employees on a daily basis. Stress levels in Operations have been ever increasing and are not healthy. There is a limit to what each individual can endure. The continual downsizing model is not sustainable. All Operations employees, both in the office and in the field, are under this constant pressure. Too many are near burnout.
