Mixed Experience at Cobs Bread Head Office (Canada): A Transparent Review of Pros and Cons
Pros
I recently worked at Cobs Bread for a brief period, and I would like to share my honest and transparent experience with potential future employees to help them make an informed decision. While there were some positive aspects, there were also several concerning issues that I believe should be addressed. During my time at Cobs Bread, I had the opportunity to meet and work with some genuinely wonderful individuals. The team comprised talented and kind-hearted individuals who were passionate about their work. The supportive and friendly atmosphere created by these colleagues made the workplace enjoyable. Cobs Bread demonstrates a strong commitment to their customers, particularly their franchisees, and the profitability of their customer base. Team social events were highlights for me, although it is unfortunate that almost all these events were farewell drinks due to an incredibly high turnover.
Cons
However, my overall experience was marred by a significant negative event. Just a day and a half before completing my three-month probation, I was unexpectedly laid off. I have full respect and understanding for why it needed to happen, however they were strategic with timing to avoid paying 2 weeks of severance, a minor amount of money. The manner in which this layoff was conducted left a bitter taste in my mouth as someone who did right by the company and put in 150% effort. An unusual offer was made to me during the layoff process: They proposed a three-month contract for the same position, albeit without any benefits, to start immediately. This offer struck me as highly perplexing and raised questions about the company's treatment of its employees. It seemed contradictory and suggested a lack of consideration for the emotional toll and loyalty of individuals who had been let go. This particular experience left me with the impression that the company may indeed exhibit abusive behaviour towards its employees. It was apparent that the company hurried the process to avoid providing the two-week notice severance, which I believe is a meager amount of money in the grand scheme of things. This move felt disheartening and inhumane, especially considering the significant amount of overtime and effort I had dedicated to the company. I do want to acknowledge that Cobs Bread's HR department extended my access to health benefits for an additional week upon my request. While this accommodation was appreciated, it does not negate the concerns raised in my review. This incident leads me to question the values and regard for employees at Cobs Bread Head Office. How a company treats its employees reflects its core principles, and unfortunately, this experience revealed a lack of value placed on employees as real humans. There are a few other notable concerns that I’d like to share. One major issue seen is the extremely tight resourcing within the company, which appears to be driven by budget constraints. This shortage of personnel and resources often leads to managers competing for resources among themselves. This lack of adequate resourcing can be attributed to a lack of strategic management in addressing the growing needs of the business and stakeholders. The absence of clear prioritization and realistic resource allocation has resulted in employees being burdened with unrealistic workloads, leading to personal turmoil. This imbalance places unnecessary strain on employees and hampers their ability to deliver their best work.
