Some leaders genuinely cared about an employees development and team success (but most didn't care).

Several respected managers who genuinely listened to employees and advocated for their teams were eventually let go, which negatively impacted morale. Employee input was not consistently valued, making it difficult to feel heard or supported. My departure was handled in a manner that felt abrupt and disrespectful. I was asked to leave immediately without meaningful explanation, which left me feeling more like a security risk than a valued employee.

I appreciated the autonomy granted to implement a digital-first approach, allowing me to significantly modernize operations and processes. The opportunity to lead strategic initiatives aimed at profitability and sustainability provided valuable professional development and allowed tangible impacts on the publication’s long-term viability. The team at Yukon News was exceptional, hardworking, committed to journalism, and deeply connected to the local community. Collaborating with them was genuinely rewarding.

Limited corporate support was a significant hindrance. The lack of clear communication, responsiveness, and strategic alignment from upper management often made progress unnecessarily difficult. Frequent leadership changes created instability, uncertainty, and difficulty in establishing consistent operational momentum and cultural cohesion. There appeared to be a disconnect between corporate expectations and the reality of operational resources, which at times led to unrealistic goals and frustration within the team.
