Pros

Great position for a new to sales rep. The organization does amazing things for independent businesses and you can be proud to represent them.

Cons

Very little financial reward, unequal territories, low compensation for sales that is taken away if a member quits before their minimum is met-even if the reason is outside of the reps control. Concerns are dismissed, demand for numbers is high. Turnover is appalling and affects sales and retention of members, yet nothing is being done to address this serious issue, in fact changes made are leading to higher turnover. Script is robotic and leaves little room to engage with prospects to actually help them buy in.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for recognizing the importance of the work we do to support independent businesses across Canada. I’m glad you see the commitment we have to serving our members. You make many important observations about your membership sales role, and I want to address them. I appreciate your honesty and frank assessment. There is no question that the District Manager role can be a challenging one – especially for those who are used to working in a far more structured sales environment. The position is a rewarding one for strong performers who are self-motivated and disciplined in using their time in the field. While we have added a few positions across the country, we have 103,000 members and approximately 200 District Managers. In fact, we have fewer DMs today than we did five years ago as we can now serve members in more ways. But I am proud to say that while other sales organizations are cutting in-person visits with clients and customers, CFIB is not. We recognize the importance of continuity of service and I’m proud that we have many staff with 10, 20, 30 and even 40 years of experience at CFIB. But it is true that we have more turnover in sales related positions than we would like. We’ve just completed a major compensation review and change to address some of the ideas our DMs have shared over the years. As for the use of a sales script, I know it can be challenging to learn. The script is an important means of helping us balance the high degree of autonomy that comes with the role. As President, it is one of the only ways I can assure that all business owners are given the same understanding of what it means to be a CFIB member and what it doesn’t. As you can imagine, with 200 reps, if each one tailored the presentation just a little, a member in Newfoundland and a member in BC could walk away with a very different understanding of what we are all about. Protecting the integrity of the organization is one of my most important jobs. Please do not be shy to share with me your ideas on how we can do even better in making CFIB a great place to work. Our employee surveys consistently find that more than 94% of staff would recommend CFIB as an employer, but we can still do better. Thank you again for sharing your perspective. Thanks for the positive review. No surprise, but I agree with you that we have a positive working environment and some incredible people working for the Federation. I just wrapped up 2 days hosting our new colleagues from across Canada in our national office in Toronto. It was great fun and left me very confident in the new crop of staff we are bringing in across the organization.

Work for a great cause

Cons

Pay structure is capped everywhere, you have to always be a top sales person or you will never get anywhere, the top or nothing to survive on, you will burn out

Thanks for the feedback. I’m pleased that you identified with our cause at CFIB. Small business owners have really struggled this past year and I have been so impressed with how our team has responded with advice and support. We’ve just completed Zoom meetings with our teams across most provinces, and staff are consistently reporting how proud they are to work for CFIB at this critical time. I’m sorry that it appears your pay expectations were not met. The District Manager job is not always an easy one and needs to be treated as a full-time role. While things were particularly challenging over the past year (due to the need to contact business owners virtually for several months), I am proud to report that nearly 15,000 small business owners made the decision to buy a paying membership during the pandemic. With the unprecedented awareness and interest in CFIB, this certainly helped us attract new members despite the challenging economic times. While serving our members is our main focus, our entire senior management team is committed to making CFIB a great place for staff to work and earn a good living. I believe we do a really solid job of that, but I am always looking for input from current (and former) staff along the way. Thanks for writing.
