Pros

Great organization to work for, they care about their workers, great benefits, great mission to help small business across Canada. It is meaningful work which helps you go through the busy and difficult days because you know you are actually helping someone. You also learn everyday because our job is to help business owners with questions such as HR, legal matters, business questions, government questions, taxes and anything you can think of, in all provinces! So you will never get bored.

Cons

Being a business advisor means to be available on the phone all day, like in a call center job, which can be tiring at times. Sometimes the volume is quite high, and we get so many requests it is easy to get overwhelmed. You need to be able and comfortable with multitasking when taking this position, being able to be on the phone, listen to our member's issue, while typing a summary and searching for resources and information to answer their question. You also need to be comfortable with not knowing everything, because there is too much to know, and sometimes you need to let them know that you will get back to them later with the answer.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughtful review and feedback. I'm really pleased to hear that you've found meaning in the work we do as it’s one of the most rewarding parts of life at CFIB. Helping small business owners across Canada navigate such a wide range of issues is no small task, and I’m constantly in awe of the expertise and professionalism our Business Advisors bring to each interaction. You’ve captured the heart of the role beautifully. It’s dynamic, fast-paced, and intellectually challenging - no two calls are ever the same. That can absolutely make the days intense at times, and I appreciate your honesty about the volume and the juggling the role can require. The fact that you’re already identifying the right mindset, being open to learning, balancing multiple tasks, and occasionally needing time to provide the best answers shows you’re on exactly the right path. I take your note about quality versus quantity seriously. Striking that balance is something we are always working on. We want our members to feel well supported and that is why we’ve recently hired some great new colleagues to help manage the call volume. I encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with your manager and colleagues. We grow stronger as an organization when our team members share these kinds of insights. Thanks again for everything you do to support Canada’s small business owners and welcome again to CFIB. Dan Kelly President and CEO

Thanks for the positive review. No surprise, but I agree with you that we have a positive working environment and some incredible people working for the Federation. I just wrapped up 2 days hosting our new colleagues from across Canada in our national office in Toronto. It was great fun and left me very confident in the new crop of staff we are bringing in across the organization.

Pay structure is capped everywhere, you have to always be a top sales person or you will never get anywhere, the top or nothing to survive on, you will burn out

Thanks for the feedback. I’m pleased that you identified with our cause at CFIB. Small business owners have really struggled this past year and I have been so impressed with how our team has responded with advice and support. We’ve just completed Zoom meetings with our teams across most provinces, and staff are consistently reporting how proud they are to work for CFIB at this critical time. I’m sorry that it appears your pay expectations were not met. The District Manager job is not always an easy one and needs to be treated as a full-time role. While things were particularly challenging over the past year (due to the need to contact business owners virtually for several months), I am proud to report that nearly 15,000 small business owners made the decision to buy a paying membership during the pandemic. With the unprecedented awareness and interest in CFIB, this certainly helped us attract new members despite the challenging economic times. While serving our members is our main focus, our entire senior management team is committed to making CFIB a great place for staff to work and earn a good living. I believe we do a really solid job of that, but I am always looking for input from current (and former) staff along the way. Thanks for writing.
