Pros

Compensation at initial start is decent in comparison to industry. Unionized for better job security. Decent benefits including defined benefit pension plan. CPI pre negotiated and provided as part of collective agreement.

Cons

Quickly pigeon holed meaning no room to move up. Lack of resources and training forcing you to put in additional hours to get the job done with no merit or recognition. Management does not recognize overtime efforts equals additional merit compensation. Merit compensation is capped to 1 to 2% annually. Union provides too many concessions to management this weakening the overall compensation, benefits and worker rights. Management is not progressive and stuck in the old styles of 80s with carrot or stick mentality. Headquarters (Kipling) is severely outdated and has crumbling buildings built from the 1960s that need major refurbishment. Zero office ambiance with rows of dated cubicles. Little to none after work employee programs or sports resulting in low morale in some departments.

Pros

1. Unionized environment. (An absolute necessity for this particular organization.) 2. Indexed Defined Benefits Pension. Commuted Value adds up fast. It is a great form of "forced investing/savings". Great payout when you quit. 3. Paid overtime. "Time and a half" for society staff. 4. Opportunity to work onsite at BP and OPG.

Cons

1. Mediocre management team who are incapable of learning from their mistakes and are NEVER held accountable for their poor performance and even poorer behavior. Passive aggressive behavior, scapegoating, and gas lighting are the norm at this organization. Don't expect to receive feedback that is actionable or constructive. Favored employees can do no wrong and unfavored employees can do no right. 2. Limited opportunity to develop new skills or gain experience in new technical areas. Training is considered an expense and is usually just the bare minimum required to meet any externally imposed requirements (client QA requirements, ISO certification, etc.). No mentoring or knowledge transfer structure to develop new employees or ensure continuity in staffing. 3. Career progression is severely limited. Merit and promotions/raises are largely uncorrelated at this organization.

Adult children with petty politics running the joint Management likes to focus on their profiles and power plays Not technically competent in design engineering / pm lots of errors overlooked and continues change improvements to re-issued - bigger $$$$
