Pros

The only positives were the artists on the floor. But now that all the stereo work has been outsourced, the people and the projects are gone.

Cons

The only reason I'm writing this review is because Legend is still in Toronto and may need to hire people to fill their VFX department at some point. If you are one of those people, I implore you, DO NOT GIVE THIS COMPANY THE BENEFIT OF YOUR SKILLS. Pay is horrible. Work hours are horrible. The studio itself is cold and dark and feels like a factory, which is how they want it so you're never comfortable. Benefits are the bare minimum with no vision coverage... in an art studio... where you need 2 good working eyes to do your job. Amenities include a couple coffee machines and 2 fridges. No transit re-reimbursement. 30-minute mandatory un-paid lunch breaks. Per-artist quotas with extra pressure for weekend work if you come up short. There are paid breaks, but you will get called out if you go one minute over. No internet. No phones allowed on the floor. Dated equipment that barley meets industry standard. Non-ergonomic chars that are all mostly broken. It's as close to a sweat shop as a VFX studio can be. Legend is a company that will bleed you dry at the lowest rate possible and kick you to the curb . They do not care about their staff at any level below management. If you're coming in as a junior, you're an expense to them, and there is a thick atmosphere of "you should consider yourself lucky to have a job". They don't deserve you. You've dedicated your life to mastering a skill. Spent thousands on education, hardware, and software to support your passion. DO NOT WASTE THAT ON THIS TOXIC COMPANY.

Pros

Most of the pros comes from my time working in the California branch. They had good training and my lead was a great guy that wanted his team to expand their knowledge and be the best team. The management was good at that time, they would even at times randomly make everyone hamburgers and buy beer for everyone. There was a good sense of community there. Other pros, decent benefits, though nothing for eyes. Weird sense it's a stereo company.

Cons

t's been 3 years since toronto started and it still feels like it's just starting. The facility is a cold and dark environment, it might line up with other artistic companies but it doesn't feel like a place that you want to spend to long in. Over the past year everyone is worried about losing their job. The person above you acting the way they do, cold, heartless, is only because if they don't say what they need to say then they well be on the chop block. HR doesn't understand what you are doing there. Most of them don't understand what your position is and they tend to ask artists what the shows we are doing, since they don't know. They seem to be pretty unhelpful most of the time and always think of the company first, not the employ, that's not how HR should be ran. Raises don't work the way you think it should. All the raises I got were based on me threatening to quit. They don't base it off of merit or work ethic. They may give you the speech of "yah but are you just working here for the money?" Which unfortunately most of our bills are payed by money... if you become a second or a lead don't expect a pay raise, just because you work harder than the one next to you doesn't mean you get paid more. Let's say you get up higher, you may be told by supervisors to work harder so you can pick up the slack of other teams. Work on the hardest shots, work till 4am, or even go to recruitment events. These are no reason to get a raise. Most companies have you bill to a show or log into an excel sheet. At Legend you bill to a single shot and every moment is calculated. They have also a way to calculate how long you took to make tea or go to the restroom. This brings an uneasiness with artists. It makes everyone uncomfortable and let's management watch you like a hawk. While you may not get more money for working harder which they don't track very well, you can get yelled at or fired for going overbid on a shot. Don't be so upset, that lead is getting yelled at by their supervisor. Credits arnt a thing you should expect at Legend. You may get it, you might see people not working on the film get it, you may even see the same name twice because they don't double check. The credits will be at the end of the scroll, but you probably won't make it. Communication is a problem that the company has had since the beginning. I can write how much I've tried and the huge list of emails I've sent hoping it would change but I digress. All and all there are a lot of problems working at Legend. Though I couldn't have made it through the last 5 years without the people. There are a lot of good artists and great leads. I've learned a lot from them and the fantastic compositing supervisors that strive from a great show. If you work here be aware of the issues, but also get to know the people they are pretty great.

Pros

If you're reading this, it's because you're interested in being this company's next big tax credit! Congrats! But please, leave your fresh sense of enthusiasm at the door. Morale is at the lowest that it's ever been, and they'd like to keep it that way. At this fine institution, you'll be supervised by a no non-sense, narcissist. He will be delighted in sharing with you all that he knows, but really only cares to talk about his 3d printing. Oh, the recently developed issue in your work, yeah, you did that. No possible way this guy could have. He 3d prints! Oh yeah, don't forget to log off when you walk away, or else he'll personally write you up. Because, you're a tax credit. Not a human. You may think, "hey, this is awful." and you're incredibly wrong. You deserve that write up, tax credit. But, soon you'll run a long looking for someone to report such incredulous acts, like the department overseer. Well, good luck. When he got promoted, he was stripped of all the privileges that one should have with that title. His job now is to play hide-n-seek. It's a lot of fun. Why one time, we played for 2 months straight! HR even got in on it. We all laughed. He's still hiding. When you get back to your logged off computer from this marvelous one-sided game, don't forget to report to your other supervisor, you have six i believe, what you have been doing. Tax cred or not, micro managing is of their utmost importance, and they must always know what you were doing. I know what you're thinking, and you'd really like to go home. Well, Tax Credit, you are! With their newly installed barn doors, you're sure to feel right at home! With a company that's done all the wrong things in the right way, you're probably telling yourself this is just some propaganda to get you intrigued. To trick you into applying here so you can find out for yourself what a company with a rule for everything is really like. It's pretty elaborate. I've almost convinced myself to go back. Truth is, Tax Credit, they'll never have that movie you're dying to work on. They barely have A movie to work on. You're going to be micro managed from the moment you step foot in that facility. They don't know how to run a successful business because success isn't in their vocabulary. Yeah, true, some tax credits love working there. It's easy to deny the reality of the situation you're in when everyone around you is to. When you meet HR, she'll come off a little sweaty, unnerving, but with a kind smile. Look for a rubiks cube, it should be in the middle of the floor in her office that has a sliding door! what a cool door. She spends most of her time staring at the cube. Because, myth has it, if it ever gets solved, the world will end. She's truly a hero. She also has no time for you, or her job. Which she's great at! When you decide to quit, don't forget to grab that enthusiasm you left at the door. Because the world is so much better out there. There are studios that really do work on Big budgeted films, who have minimals rules, and treat you more than a tax credit. You'll go places, but only after you escape the barnyard!

Cons

Only 3 choices of coffee. What are we, farm animals? There is water. For that, we give thanks.
