Pros

Gorgeous store, clean, well-organized, many good people

Cons

Training is rushed and not very thorough, some people in management positions are unpleasant and tend toward bullying, union mentality prevails - people may not be willing to assist because it's "not my job," lots of manufactured drama!

Pros

Unionized, pay increases every 500 hours, good benifits for part timers through the union, benifits for full time through the company. Part time employees get vacation pay at the end of the year. Full timers vacation is payed when you take holidays.

Cons

There is no good way to say this but as soon as Sobeys bought Safeway they have become a uncaring company. Expect to work every weekend and hard. Very little hours given to new hires. They promise hours but within weeks of being hired on they brop those hours down. They expect you to treat them as your first priority, but don't give enough hours to live on. Less staff than they should have on the floor. Management lie and tell you they care but really don't. Lack of training, a few hours on the computer then down to the wolves. Customers are allowed to miss treat staff, as managment will not side with employees they would rather sell that loaf of bread instead of kicking the rude customer out. They give you power to make decisions, then take it away, then give it back. They don't follow their own policies, but expect employees too. The vacation pay at the end of the year is added on to your regular check so expect large taxes off of it. Exact same pay whether your a courtesy clerk or meat cutter. They use to pay for the position your in, now every one gets the same. Starting wage is minimum yet you pay union dues. They use to have different pay scales for the different positions but no longer. It's minimum.

Pros

I had previously worked for thrifty foods, which is owned by the same parent company, Sobeys, and I was always treated well. The people I worked with were great. I also lost a ton of weight working in the bakery as it is such a physical job! As long as you don’t eat a lot of the product.

Cons

I was promised full time hours with benefits, but when I started it was more like casual part time. I worked 15-20 hours a week and was later told it would take me about 3 years to be eligible for benefits. My manager would also go out of his way to schedule me on days I requested not to work. Not to mention his assistant managers grabby hands and constant invasion of person space.
