Pros

50% discount from day one. Weekends off if you worked in production. Hiring process was easy.

Cons

Everything? This is hands down the worst job I've ever had. I only worked there for about a month and I was sick the entire time. I worked in "Production" which is just a fancy word for working in the back room dealing with the gross donations. My duties consisted of sorting through a 2000 LB cart full of clothes, books, shoes, housewares, and purses in 25 minutes. You would have to pull down a 20 LB bag and sort through it and keep going until the cart was empty. If you did it in over 25 minutes they'd make you feel like a total failure and that you're about to be fired. I'm a 20 year old 120 lb woman, it took me about 40 minutes to do each cart, which I thought was pretty damn quick, and I was sweating, coughing, wheezing and sneezing and felt like I was about to pass out by the end of it. I ended up having to wear a dust mask all day long which stank and gave me a rash. You had to do about 4 carts a day yourself. Then you'd rotate and go on to hanging the clothes. Again, if you did this any slower than lightening speed they'd start yelling at you to speed up and tell you you're slowing down the entire store. And the quotas. We'd get random, INSANE quotas each day from corporate and have to meet them lest we be chastised at the morning meeting. The donations we got were absolutely disgusting. Covered in literal cat pee, baby puke, mold, mud, dirt, old food, crotch and pit stains. A lot of the times they were mixed in with needles, used condoms, tampons, garbage, and other much worse things. And they wanted you to sort through this stuff so quickly that you'd often find yourself grabbing onto something awful because you didn't have the chance to look at it first. The place was FULL of dust and debris, I was told by another employee that the air ducts didn't work and had actually never worked which did hell on my allergies. Absolutely no encouragement or positive rienforcement from management. Everyone who worked there had carpal tunnel, bad backs, bad knees, respritory problems, or a combination. Also the first place I've ever worked that made staff clean the bathrooms? Disgusting and not on my job description. Shift was 7:30-4 Monday to Thursday and 7-3:30 on Fridays. So you had to wake up at the crack of dawn to work in this sweat shop. The only good thing was the discount which you weren't even allowed to use unless the item had been out for at least 2 days, and by that point anything worth buying was usually gone. Went to the doctor at the end of it and he told me I had bronchitis caused by my environment. Took me another month to completely get over it after I had quit. I have NO idea why anyone works here. The pay is minimum and the raises are about 10 cents a year. Benefits are awful and the work is hard hard labour. I went home every day at 4 and had to lay down for at least an hour due to all the pain in my back and wrists. And I only worked there for 1 month! And I'm only 20! They give you a tiny little cube locker for all your stuff too, which you need to use because if you leave anything anywhere it's considered a donation and good luck seeing it again. I DO NOT recommend this job to anyone at all.

Pros

Always something to do. Some great customers and co-workers. Interesting items to see. 50% discount off clothes and 30% off other items. Casual dress code. Benefits but only for full time staff and most are hired to be part time. Could be a good experience IF management likes you.

Cons

I lasted six weeks at this job, giving it my all before I had to leave due to the toxicity. Management seemed nice when hiring me but quickly I saw the mind games, such as being nice to some employees while not even acknowledging others. I believe this comes from the fact that this corporation is driven strictly by profit (despite glossy spin doctoring and public relations efforts) and management is under pressure to meet quotas, keep labour costs ridiculously low and maximize PROFIT. The result is that those who stay on as management are those who are comfortable putting the companies' goals ahead of the best interests of employees. The wage is so low (usually minimum or just above) for what is expected of you. You can never work hard enough and if you are not a management favorite, you will feel micro-managed and inadequate. I personally experienced ageism, with younger staff being treated with much more respect than us older workers (over forty). I found the whole experience very hard on my self-esteem as I was very enthusiastic and did my very best. They were quick to point any short comings but provided little positive feedback. I was not given adequate time to learn their cash system and was then treated as if I was stupid when I had questions or made an error. Despite the fact that they claim to have zero tolerance for bullying, I found some staff down right rude to me, refusing to acknowledge me. Petty high school dynamics from management down. There were some great people too, I just do not know how they cope with the negativity. No professional janitors, horrible ventilation system, bad for allergies, asthma and overall health. Huge problem with shop lifting which due to legalities staff are expected to do little about. But on the other hand, there is the expectation that staff micro-manage customers entering the change rooms, counting items etc. Contradictions that lead to low morale, grey areas that give management room to reprimand when it suits them. The work is very physical, on your feet whole shift, carrying heavy piles of clothing to be hung up, maintaining store with large square footage. Nothing wrong with hard work but minimum wage does not come close to covering the expectations. Customers can be extremely rude and difficult to please. The staff discounts sound great but ultimately it means staff end up giving a portion of their low wages back to the company.

Pros

- 50% off discount on clothing and books - get free food when there's spare cash in the employee savings account - get a gift at Christmas

Cons

- the stores are dirty (dust, dander, pollen, cockroaches) and pose the threat of things like bed bugs and lice - the bathrooms are disgusting and even though management is supposed to clean up bodily fluids (that's even said in the five hours of training videos they give you) they'll make you do it - everything in the back is run on quotas that are huge and often unrealistic - customers are horrendous, they think because it's used they can treat it roughly, make a mess, and get angry at the prices - you're pressured into signing people up for Club Cards and no one understands what they're for; they'll be old people that were convinced to sign up but didn't have an email to be told when sales are that have no idea how the card works and will get angry when they don't get a discount with it - senior's day is a nightmare - sale days are nightmares - always understaffed and then always cutting hours on top of that - a huge turnover rate in part timers because the work is hard/no hours to go around - a huge sense of favouritism (especially at the Roger's Road location) - usually late nights because there's not enough people scheduled to close - ridiculously early mornings - micro-management all the way down the hierarchy that confuses everyone and contradicts what the last person said so that no new implements are ever put in place - incredible pressure to get the quarterly bonus (all of $75 dollars if you make it) - will get written up or talked to for anything from not up-selling Club Cards to going to the bathroom during your shift - a high chance of injury, especially in production - on-call shifts are tedious and horrible; they think if they have you on-call for a four hour afternoon shift that your whole day belongs to them and will get super upset when you're not that flexible - will insist on you missing things like school and doctor appointments to work sale days or just busy days in general - will put a tonne of work on the shoulders of good employees while the bad ones or unwillingly to do hard work ones get to coast - you will get dress coded on things that fit the dress code (ie: grey denim instead of black even though it only says denim in the employee handbook) - can be forced to work a 10+ hour shift if you're scheduled from 2 till close since you're not supposed to leave until the store is clean at the end of the day (can be a nightmare during the busy period of Halloween)
