Pros

- Work load is not excessive - Above average salary - Flexible hours & time off - Perks include free TTC use/ public transportation

Cons

Having worked in H/R I can confirm the majority of positions are filled through internal referrals. Although jobs are posted on the TTC career web page and are open for anyone to apply to, the majority of openings already have destined incumbents. I have raised concern on several occasions why fully qualified candidates are not being considered or why the interview panel does not accurately document applicant responses during interviews so they are scored accurately and have a fair chance for consideration. Unfortunately the depth of nepotism and persuasion is far reaching at all levels within the Toronto Transit Commission. Another very disturbing matter is interview panel participants obtaining interview questions days and in some cases weeks in advance. On a few interviews I sat in, individuals whom are barely able to hold a conversation in English, responded with perfect scripted answers for which they obtained in advance by someone in either H/R or a member of the interview panel. I ultimately decided to resign because of how disturbing the TTC’s hiring practices are and pursued an opportunity still in the public sector, however with the Province.

Pros

Great pay, free transit pass, excellent benefits, good working hours.

Cons

Female employees not treated fairly. Cases of sexual harassment and sexual assault still occur and management sweeps these incidents under the rug still. After 30 years of seminars, corporate policies things remain as they were when I started in the early 80's. Such as discrimination, leering at females, inappropriate touching, name calling and when female employees complain to their boss they are told to keep it quiet. Then management refuses to investigate. If a file is created management will still close it down to save face. This leads to female employees leaving the company. Confidentiality concerns exists Commission wide. Seems everyone knows everyone else's business including if you have a serious disease, financial dread or other major events in your life. Non union employees scared and unable to stand up for themselves and when they do they get hammered from executives. In turn their pay is docked or they are told to go home and stay there a few days. Union members have it better than non union.

Pros

Great pay, benefits, and pension.

Cons

No work-life balance - scheduling works on a seniority system so drivers are stuck working weekends and long days with split shifts for 15years+ until they can start signing work that is straight Mon-Fri dayshifts. You are just a number - being late is absolutely unacceptable (2 times in a year is cause for suspension). They demand proof for any incidents related to family emergencies. Any accidents or incidents in the job are heavily scrutinized and you're always on trial trying to prove your innocence. Being a woman in the industry is an immediate negative - male supervisors undermine you and don't believe you (especially for calls about equipment malfunctions). Everyone hates you - the public, management, coworkers who screw you in the routes. Everyone is miserable. This company is literally a "grind out 30miserable years and enjoy a nice retirement" company.
