Pros

Flexible hours Most coworkers are great and friendly Safe work environment Stable hours. Can plan the rest of your day around work.

Cons

As a previous review mentioned, once minimum wage goes to $15 an hour in January 2022 there will be no raises until you work for 5 years, and even then a max of $16 an hour. You are better off pouring coffee in a drive thru for minimum wage and not having to sort through peoples literal garbage for the same wage. Union is more worried about fighting mandatory vaccination for employees and testing for the unvaccinated than securing a better wage for staff. Ashamed my union dues go towards fighting vaccination. It is true the full time workers make almost double the part timers but most will avoid doing customer facing work at all costs and leave part timers to fend for themselves. Probably was a decent job 10+ years ago but at this point in time would never be able to recommend working here. Even for the recent referral bonus did not have the heart to recommend this job to anyone in my network looking for work. Unless you enjoy dealing with rude/drunk/belligerent customers. Sorting through trash and smelly/unsanitary empties for as little as legally possible to pay you, don’t bother applying here.

New contract is awful

Pros

This used to be a great place to work while you were a student because you'd hit the top wage rate as a part timer right in time for graduation.

Cons

The new contract caps part time wages at $16/hour, after 5 years of employment. Minimum wage will be going up to $15/hour in January. That means that you get the opportunity to sort trash and literally get spit on by angry customers for 5 years before you can make a dollar above minimum. Meanwhile a full timer will take their sweet time in the back, away from all the customers, leaving you up front to fend for yourself while they make $29/hour.

Pros

The Beer Store is a place where you can put in your time and earn your wage. Once you are hired it is near impossible to be fired, short of stealing from the company or being truant too many times. The atmosphere is fairly laid back with the right manager and the job is fairly easy at the retail level. It pays well, and is a fairly secure job.

Cons

Very hard to advance to full time or manager. There is a lot of nepotism within the company and the upper management doesn't really have time to help you advance if you are looking to move up in the company. Also as of this review, the company is shrinking and they are not looking to hire more people into full time, so there is very little prospect of advancement in the near future. The job is sometimes very gritty. Depending on where you are employed it can be a hassle. In the suburbs you'll have to deal with teenagers trying to buy beer under age, and soccer moms giving it to you because they had a bad day. In the inner city you have to deal with aggressive and depressing drunks and alcoholics that you have to turn away. There's theft and the danger that comes with someone who really needs their fix and doesn't have any money. Beer is a drug, it's a hard thing to manage for those who are not prepared.
