Pros

Co-workers are great people, and I guess you get a free membership.

Cons

The organization is run very poorly. Most of the problems that we can think of start and end with management and their horrible communication. How much people dislike management, and the job in general, is an almost daily conversational topic. The Y's are all incredibly understaffed and so we're expected to pick up extra shifts (at any branch in our half of the city) to cover for management's poor scheduling and then we get in trouble for having overtime because we weren't supposed to take it. To make matters worse they are cutting hours at the busiest locations, and adding shifts at the smaller locations (that already complain about not having enough work to do) because now the larger locations don't have the staff to answer the phones and they need someone to answer the overflow calls. There is no room for growth within the company, and they will 90% of the time hire an external applicant instead of a more qualified internal applicant. Usually, this is to replace one of the few good managers that left because they were also sick of how poorly run everything is. There are also tons of "safety" policies that are out-dated and only serve to breed conflict. Naturally as Member Services we are expected to diffuse conflict while also enforcing the same rules that create the conflicts in the same place. Then, while we enforce these same rules that we can be fired for not enforcing (as we are reminded often) the managers will just walk in and cancel the rule on the spot just to avoid conflict. Suddenly, instead of enforcing the rules we just look like the rude employees that are trying to make things more difficult for everyone. On top of all that (and more) we are severely under payed for the amount of abuse we receive from customers and management itself. Most of us are so sick of being at the Y we don't even have the will to use our memberships because we can't stand the idea of being here for any longer than we have to be.

Cons

Where do I even start? Horrible pay (minimum wage), why is it that slide attendants make the same amount of money as member services representatives who literally have the HARDEST job in the whole building?? Constantly dealing with RUDE people. I thought working at a recreation center would be great, what could people complain about? WELL LET ME TELL YOU. I don't think I have worked a single shift where I haven't been yelled at over someone else's mistake or something completely out of my control. Huge conflicts with people downright threatening you are almost a daily occurrence. I know several staff members who have had to take a leave of absence due to deteriorating mental health because of their job. Upper management is a joke and enjoy using fear and intimidation to get employees to do what they want. They are beyond unorganized, causing customers to complain and take their anger out on member services rep's because they think it is our fault. They also don't back up their front line staff. I have had customers threaten me and when I tell a manager, instead of banning them from the building, they apologize for the inconvenience. They also thought it would be a great idea to cut the member services hours, leaving maximum 3 people on at a time in the evenings. When it gets busy, as it usually does in the evenings, people can't even go on their break because they are trying to deal with the large line ups and constant complaints from customers upset they had to wait in line for 20 minutes or more. Oh ya, and while this is all going on, there are constant phone calls that management expects us to answer. Try answering the phone when there are 20+ people in line waiting and see how long it takes for someone to yell at you. Please. With the volume of calls the YMCA has, a call centre should be implemented if you want to cut everyones hours.

Pros

Free membership Classes offered at discounted rate

Cons

No opportunity for growth Very few full time positions No raises No health benefits I liked it in the beginning but they didn’t give opportunities to get a raise throughout the many years I’ve worked here. I’m still stuck working at minimum wage being offered only two to three shifts a week. My shifts end up being only 4 hours in length. Overall not an ideal situation for anyone. Not only that but my boss has made me come in on several occasions when I’m sick because she doesn’t hire more staff then she absolutely needs. God forbid someone get sick or be in the hospital. This job has too many disadvantages for me and I will be quitting in the near future.
