Greater workplace equality continues to boost companies' performance, according to Morgan Stanley’s proprietary HERS ranking. Over a decade ago, Morgan Stanley Research analysts set out to understand if companies that increase their focus on gender diversity make an impact on their bottom line. Analysts did this by scoring companies based on gender diversity at all levels — board members, executives, managers and employees — and then comparing those scores against share-price performance. The most recent analysis proves again that gender diversity can drive results. Based on an examination of 1,875 firms on the MSCI World Index, those with greater gender diversity— and therefore a higher Holistic Equal Representation Score (HERS)— outperformed less gender-diverse firms (those with lower HERS rankings) by 1.6% in 2022. "We believe that it’s worth keeping an eye on companies that make sustainable progress on gender diversity in the workplace," shared Stephen C. Byrd, Head of Morgan Stanley's Global Sustainability Research team. Read on for more Morgan Stanley ideas.
We are incredibly excited to share our new global brand campaign, Old School Grit. New World Ideas. This modern, cinematic campaign represents a different look and feel for our 87-year-old brand, which has become increasingly appealing to a much broader audience. It celebrates the unique combination of seemingly contradictory qualities that makes Morgan Stanley so special: the old-school grit of an experienced doer and the new-world ideas of an innovator. “After a number of recent strategic acquisitions, Morgan Stanley has a unique story to tell both in terms of where we’ve been and where we’re going,” said our Chief Marketing Officer, Alice Milligan, in an AdWeek interview. “Our new campaign celebrates our legacy as a trusted firm while showcasing how we’re helping shape the world of tomorrow.” Narrating the campaign film is Grammy-nominated artist Janelle Monáe. She's an incredibly talented singer, songwriter and actor, and she truly embodies the spirit of this campaign, having unapologetically charted her own path, overcoming obstacles and blazing trails along the way.

“If you’re going to be in space and you want to be competitive, you want to gather the best team,” says Kristine Liwag, head of Aerospace & Defense Equities Research at Morgan Stanley. “And that should be regardless of background or gender.” That led to a partnership with former astronaut Cady Coleman, space engineer Vinita Marwaha Madill, and others to develop a reimagined spacesuit. The Access I, recently unveiled in New York, is a conceptual spacesuit designed to be inclusive of all genders and inspire more women to participate in the space industry. By 2040, the market for the booming global space industry is expected to grow to $1.1 trillion. Yet the current state of the industry and it’s 50+ year history has not translated into increased diversity among those who participate in space missions. One stark example of this exists at the most basic level: the spacesuit. Our goal is to ensure that this burgeoning market opportunity is equally distributed, no matter an individual’s background or gender. Learn more about the Access I prototype and how this idea was brought to life.
