A waiter, also known as a server, is usually employed within the foodservice industry. A waiter works to create a positive experience for guests in a restaurant by meeting their needs. They use their knowledge of the menu to make recommendations and answer the questions. A waiter will take an order detailing the customer's requests and inform the back of the house staff of the new order. They then will then deliver the plated food to the appropriate customer and see to it that the food was prepared to their satisfaction.
A high school diploma or GED is generally necessary to become hired for this position. A food safety certification is preferred as a waiter will interact with food daily. People employed as a waiter usually have spent time in the food industry previously either as a busser or food runner. A customer-focused person with a proactive approach to their work would likely do well as a waiter.
