Pros

Remote, so you save commuting time.

Cons

1. Free Labor: After starting your work, they will ask you to review hundreds of pages of SOPs and take quizzes to prepare for consulting. They do pay you for this, BUT the pay is not at all comparable to the amount of time you spend reviewing the SOPs. For example, you get around $60 for 8 hours of your time, which works out to about $7.50 per hour. When you tell them the compensation is unfair, their response is that your reviewing speed is slow, and since you're new, that's why it takes you that long. Remember, the minimum wage in Canada is more than $17.30 per hour. After many years of schooling and earning a PhD, are you sure you want to do such free labor? 2. Defensive, Intransigent, Gaslighting: During the learning process, you will go through hundreds of SOPs and videos, and you will find discrepancies between them and between what their coaches tell you. This causes confusion, especially since all the material you are reviewing lacks a clear quantitative method for measurement—everything is qualitative. For example, one coach might mark a student's work in a way that differs from what you learned in a video. When you point out the discrepancy, they won't accept it at all and will respond as though the problem is with you, not their lack of clarity. As a result, you’ll find yourself in a company where they refuse to accept any of their mistakes and instead gaslight you. 3. Terrible Work-life Balance: Yes, you choose your hours to work, BUT you never know how many sessions they will assign for the hours you've chosen to work. So, you can never truly schedule your life because, as I mentioned before, they give you tasks that take much more time than what they've allocated for them. As a result, you end up spending much more time , and you usually have to work even after the hours you've set as your working hours. Each task has a deadline, and if you don't deliver the work before the deadline, they will fine you! When you tell them the tasks need more time, they will reply, "You need to be faster, and the time we've considered is correct." As a result, not only can you not schedule your life and need to be constantly ready to overwork, but you also get underpaid for the hours they refuse to acknowledge should be compensated. 4. No Future, Wasting Your Life: Your title is "Academic Consultant," BUT you are actually a "Sales Associate"! Why? Because they have a rating system where students and coaches rate your work. You are constantly stressed about your rating, because if it's lower than what they want, they will fire you! Don't be tricked by what they say in the contract—they can easily fire you by just sending you an email and blocking your access to their system. So, you will always be worried about your rating, because in a sales-driven environment, whoever performs better (higher rating) stays, and whoever performs worse (lower rating) gets fired. Is this what you want after many years of studying and earning a PhD, or becoming a doctor or lawyer? I know the job market isn't great, but don't make the mistake I made by joining this company. You will undersell your time and energy. You are worth much, much more than working for a company like this. Just go to LinkedIn and search for the names of their previous consultants (you can find some of their names in their teaching videos) and see where they are now after leaving BeMo. After a few years of working for BeMo, they all ended up back on the path they were on before joining BeMo. Because, in the end, there is no future at BeMo for you. 5. You Are Never Their Priority—Students Are: They don’t care about you at all. Why? Because the money comes from students, so their priority is always the students. This means you are constantly stressed about your performance, because if, for any reason, a student is unhappy with your service, BeMo will fire you. It doesn’t matter if the comment comes from an angry student who is super stressed because this is their last chance to get admission. The student is always right, so you are always under stress, wondering, what if the student doesn’t like my service? You can see this stress and fear in the eyes of even their coaches when they are coaching a student. So, be ready to work in a company where, at any moment, you can get fired because of a negative comment from a student. 6. You Won’t Feel Like You Are Part of a Warm Team at All: From time to time, you’ll see them post pictures of gatherings at restaurants—always with certain people, like the owner and some of the consultants. But you won’t be invited, even though it’s in your city. Why? Because they don’t consider you part of the group. They always have an inner circle who invite themselves, yet at other times, they say, “We are a family!” This is a big contradiction. As you can see, they are not clear or honest with their team. Overall, I’m saying this because I care about you and because they won’t tell you these things. You’ve done so much schooling and you really deserve a good job. I know you might be tired of job hunting, but don’t lose hope and don’t settle for jobs in companies like BeMo.

Hi, We value feedback, but this review contains significant inaccuracies that misrepresent our company’s values, policies, and practices. We’d like to address these points and clarify the facts: 1. Compensation for Preparation: As a contractor—not an employee—it’s essential to have the expertise required to effectively support our students. While many companies do not provide or compensate contractors for preparation time, we go a step further by offering comprehensive resources and compensating contractors based on the complexity of the services they are preparing for. This process is clearly explained during the interview, ensuring transparency from the beginning. 2. BeMo is a performance-focused organization, and our commitment to high-quality standards is non-negotiable. Unfortunately, this consultant consistently underperformed despite receiving extensive coaching, support, and sufficient time to improve. Their termination was based solely on their inability to meet these standards, which is crucial for maintaining the level of service our students deserve. 3. Our team is composed of over 100 consultants, including dentists, dental students, lawyers, law students, medical students, physicians, PhDs, and others. Many of these professionals successfully balance their work at BeMo alongside other demanding personal and professional commitments. This demonstrates that the flexibility we provide allows consultants to manage their workload effectively. 4. We also provide ample support for consultants who may experience challenges. If tasks are taking longer than expected, consultants are encouraged to reach out for guidance and coaching. We are committed to helping our team members improve their efficiency and succeed in their roles. While we understand that not every role is the right fit for everyone, our structure has been proven to work for the majority of our team. 5. Yes, our students are our number 1 priority, as they are the reason for our work. However, we do not make decisions about consultants based on a single complaint or without due diligence. Each complaint is thoroughly investigated to ensure fairness and accuracy before any action is taken. Consultants are given ample opportunities to address and resolve issues before further steps are considered. 6. Over 80% of our full-time managers started as part-time consultants, and many of our coaches have been promoted based on strong performance. This reflects our commitment to creating meaningful career paths for team members who demonstrate excellence and dedication. 7. We’re proud to host fun events that include our part-time consultants—something many companies don’t typically offer. While team dinners are reserved for full-time employees, this is simply part of our effort to ensure consistency and recognize the unique contributions of our full-time team members. Finally, while we understand that our fast-paced, high-performance culture may not suit everyone, we remain proud of the opportunities we provide and the fairness with which we treat our team members. This consultant’s negative experience is a result of their inability to meet expectations and align with our standards, not a reflection of shortcomings on our part.

Pros

I have been with BeMo since about late October 2025. Mentorship has been vital to me on my own professional journey, so discovering BeMo and their alignment with this same mission was an immediate point of alignment for me. To this end, the structure of BeMo's offered services is fantastic. Their advising programs are very comprehensive, which allows for individuals from diverse backgrounds to find a home within the company and be able to help students in their areas of expertise. That said, all consultants are trained in session types outside of their direct focus and are more than equipped to handle any session (or at the very least, will have a network of others to rely on for support). My role focuses primarily on medical admissions, however, I have led sessions for dental candidates, PA candidates, and more. BeMo creates all the necessary guides to lead each session type (which you cover extensively during onboarding; more on that below in "Cons"), so you are never without guidance if you run into trouble. My experience with leadership has been very positive overall. Everyone is quite accessible through our communication channels and willing to help out with session questions, other admin concerns, or personal situations that have come up. Furthermore, the team will perform routine quality checks on consultant sessions and use them as opportunities for constructive feedback and to assess consultant progress, which is a nice way to make sure you are meeting the necessary benchmarks and able to improve if need be. Without going into specifics here, the pay has been pretty solid. Definitely can be variable based on where in the admissions cycle we are, but overall there have been no complaints there for me. However, US-based applicants note that you will NOT receive a 1099, so you will need to file your BeMo compensation under self-employment. While there is no in-person component for the majority of consultants, our management teams will still create ways for everyone to connect, such as through video-call "socials", which has been a nice way to meet other consultants and learn more about our broader team. Overall, if you care about helping students and want to be able to carve out a flexible way for you to do that and get compensated along the way, there are few places better to do that than BeMo. That said, the passion to help students really needs to be the driving factor—seeing them succeed is what it is all about.

Cons

My main con is that the training/onboarding process is way too long and involved. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of material to cover if you are getting a new consultant up to speed on the application processes for all the medical programs across a handful of countries (US, Canada, UK, Australia, etc.). But more times than not, you are actually covering the more common application types (i.e., US and Canada) in sessions. A bigger emphasis should be placed on teaching a new consultant how to run the session types broadly and get a good system down there, then as they get booked for these less common sessions, allow them to map their session expertise onto the new application system or profession. The core elements are roughly the same, but going through everything upfront only to maybe have 1 or 2 of those session types seems like a hard balance. Despite being compensated for your time during the onboarding modules (which is nice), I would not want to go through the beginning days of onboarding here again under its current structure. In terms of other cons...hmmm...well if I am being nit-picky, I would say that the technology infrastructure at BeMo could probably be improved. In my opinion, the website consultants operate off seems outdated and could be better structured to keep consultant workflows in mind. Related to this, while I understand the need to preserve student confidentiality and data, I feel that the company can better embrace new technology (including AI) to help improve its internal workflows. My final con is related to the seasonality of the work at times. Not a huge issue for me personally like I said, but something to keep in mind if you would want or need to rely on BeMo compensation as a primary source of income. Definitely feasible during the height of interview season, but may taper off during other times of the year.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review. It really means a lot to hear how strongly our mission around mentorship and student support resonates with you. That alignment is something we care deeply about, so it is great to see it reflected in your experience. We are also glad to hear that you have found the team accessible and supportive. The quality checks and feedback loops are meant to help consultants grow with confidence, so it is encouraging to know that is coming through in a positive way. It is also great to hear that you have had the chance to work across different session types and feel supported doing so. Your feedback on onboarding is very fair. We know it is a lot, and while the goal is to set everyone up with a strong foundation across programs, we also recognize that it can feel overwhelming upfront. We are actively looking at ways to make onboarding more streamlined and practical, especially by focusing more on core session delivery early on and allowing consultants to build from there. We also appreciate your thoughts on technology and internal systems. This is an area we are continuing to invest in, and your feedback reinforces the importance of making our tools more intuitive and aligned with how consultants actually work day to day. Thank you again for your honesty and for the work you do with students. It does not go unnoticed, and we are glad to have you as part of the team.
