I have been working for a long time and I can say without hesitation that I have never seen an organization operate quite like this one. Frankly, its surprising it hasn't faced serious repercussions by now. The turnover is relentless, the culture is consistently unhealthy, and the direction of the place seems to shift the according to whatever the president happens to prioritize on a given day. The stress here starts well before Monday arrives. In all my years of working, I haven't ever encountered an environment that took such a toll on mental and physical well-being. Problematic behavior is routinely excused, sometimes even encouraged while the leaders who try to do the right thing often find themselves sidelines, Policies and expectations can change overnight and not a single person feels secure. I noticed having a different opinion than the leader is effectively a risk to your job. Youre told youre allowed to have one but then you get called out and spoken down to in rooms full of people. It is always handled subtly enough to maintain appearances. Over time I have watched capable, hardworking individuals lose their spark due to the abuse and be pushed out or made to believe they werent good enough, while others who contribute to the toxicity and engage in unethical actions are celebrated and promoted. It is disgusting to witness and the damage this place has caused for many of us is far more significant than most realize.

Build a Dream is one of the most rewarding places I have ever worked. The work is meaningful in a very real way, and you see the impact firsthand in the students, parents and communities you support. It feels incredible to know your work contributes to opening doors and changing futures. The environment is supportive, collaborative and full of energy. People genuinely care about the mission and it shows. There is plenty of room to grow, try new things and build skills while being encouraged every step of the way. The sense of purpose here is strong and it gives every day real meaning.

There are very few downsides. If anything, I would love to see even more government funding directed toward the organization because the work Build a Dream does is so important and has such a positive impact. Additional resources would only amplify the reach and the outcomes.
