Pros

Incredible benefits including flex benefit options, generous defined contribution pension, summer Fridays off at 2, vacation plus a week off at Christmas, etc. Highly intelligent staff. Compensation is typically quite competitive - although some exceptions Great mandate

Cons

So. Many. Leaders. Very very fat, inflated and completely unecessary. Causes a lot of over management and too many hands in the pot. Old school bureaucratic culture - nothing moves fast, including your career This is a company that plays favorites. If you drink the kool aid and align yourself with the right people, you will do very well. But if you have ideas that challenge those in power, you will feel it. Initiatives seem great on the surface but are all done at a very superficial, 'tick box' level including greenwashing, 'best place to work', diversity and inclusion, employee feedback, leader development, corporate values, corporate strategy, customer focus, etc. Some of the most influential members of the senior leadership team are narcissistic, out of touch and known bullies. No culture of accountability. There's a strategic plan, but no plans on how to operationalize it

Pros

Pre-Covid there was a gym, great location, regular engagement committees and a somewhat earnest effort at being a progressive employer in the nation's capital. In short, EDC was better than most government agencies and crown corporations, but still short of the tech giant in Ottawa.

Cons

EDC has failed to acknowledge systemic racism and discrimination in the workplace. There are cliques at EDC as there are in any workplace but these have been destructive toward career development and the bottom line (work is not happening, or overspending is occurring). The COVID19 quarantine has exposed the gap between ICs and management in that there are a lot of 'managers' moving tasks on ADO boards and not enough firepower at the IC level to get important work done. This has left the workforce disheartened, disenchanted, and disengaged.

Pros

Benefits, low work load, GYM, Everything is good if you dont look for money or career ! Good if you like to keep your head low and dont speak or criticize any policy or procedure

Cons

Although it looks very professional from outside, it is absolutely not from inside. everything depends on personal relationship, no matter what u do for the business. no clear guidelines, yet millions of vague protocols all over the place Working at EDC depends 90% on who do you know and to what extent they like you. you might be the most efficient at your work, but if you dont have personal relationship with your manager you will move no where. The overall environment is not comfortable, every word you say can affect your career, as the company is full of rats. With people spending half of their life with no promotions at EDC, you will find a lot of hard feelings to any newcomer. Overall, if you are successful in your current job dont think of EDC. if you are unemployed and dont fidn work somewhere else, then go for it (a Senior manager told me that inside EDC after I was employed ! - It is a place for people who didnt find job elsewhere!) Forget about promotions, moving to another departments, going outside to other countries, unless you were hired like that. watch out for the first two months (they call them the honey moon), where they leave you work on your own and feel comfortable to slam hard after. The big theme that this is a professional and ethical place is absolutely not correct. Even HR might be sneaky if the officer is in good terms with the person you are complaining about.
