Pros

Excellent learning environment at junior levels, with lots of responsibilities

Cons

Top Mgmt and HR paint a rosy picture of merit-based career paths and mobility. Neither of these are true, unless you spend more time playing internal politics than in helping customers. Typical scenario on a project: 2-5 junior people will do the real work, 5-10 middle managers will fight over how it should or should not be done and who should get credit or blame. Top mgmt will wait and then reward the winner of politics among middle managers Top mgmt has no vision, and no incentive to shake-up and reduce the entrenched middle management, because Gemalto remains the industry leader by default. No incentive for new entrants to challenge it due to high entry barriers and low margins. So, its a great environment for learning technical and project management skills early in your career since middle managers try to palm off everything to inexperienced staff. Stay away if you dont like to be challenged early!

Pros

Relatively flexible schedule ( with production’s blessing) Decent Benefits

Cons

Toxic relationships with its clients Skilled workers are seriously underpaid Too many single points of failures that would disrupt its core business Work environment onsite is a disaster Undefined job scopes and responsibilities can be frustrating Uncertainties caused by declining growth, loss of business, and non-transparency from management

Glass ceiling for the non-French

Pros

Worldwide scale and international presence. Opportunities to work around the world, up to a certain management level.

Cons

Virtually all of the top positions, even for groups that operate outside of Europe, are occupied by French nationals. If one was not born in France, no amount of effort or success will translate into a promotion above the VP level. There is also a French culture of arrogance and laziness throughout the company that makes getting things done impossible. The Gemalto card manufacturing plant in PA is a paradigm of inefficiency and the team there has a complete lack of initiative and motivation to deliver results. In short, the entire company seems to give the message of "Go away, I'm sleeping."
