Solid Company

Pros

Very well managed, secure. Very few 'layers'. There's a reason people stay for years. They believe in promoting from within and always post internally first. Each region is managed like a small business but they have the advantages of a large corporation. Deep pockets, willing to make capital investments.

Cons

Very old industry with very old business practices. On cusp of transitioning from baby boomers to Gen X and Millennials. They are struggling with resistance from older employees. Very few females in management/sales roles.

Best Job in the Company

Pros

Once you navigate the politics of dealing with a large and decentralized corporate entity such as Russel Metals, you'll find many down to earth people that just want to do their jobs and have fun. Compensation was the best part, more then fair, I would say.

Cons

My job was based at a small and often underappreciated branch of the company, as an outside sales rep. I covered several thousand km's per year, but it's never enough. Not much in the way of training or mentoring, just get out there find the customers and make them buy! Management had a somewhat detached view of the market conditions.
