“It’s really hard to remember when I was young and first diagnosed... I just felt like I was different. There wasn’t really any way to relate to people in that sort of way.” 🎗️ September is #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth, and we’re honoured to share Zoe Mak's story. Zoe was first diagnosed with a rare cancer called spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentiation (SETTLE) in 2015 when she was just eight years old. After surgery to remove the tumor, she was cancer-free – until 2019, where she learned that the cancer had metastasized to her lungs. Since then, Zoe has bravely faced multiple treatments and clinical trials, showing incredible strength and resilience through every challenge. “My doctor told me that there are about 42 people in the world that have my type of cancer, so it’s not really researched. There are things to be special in, and this is not one of them.” 🏕️ One of Zoe’s brightest experiences has been attending Camp Goodtimes, a place where she finally felt understood and supported. She’s now a Leader in Training and hopes to become a lifeguard in 2026. Camp has given Zoe a space to connect, heal, and grow—reminding her that she’s never alone in her journey. As of 2024, Zoe’s cancer is shrinking. Through Camp Goodtimes as well as running and volunteering in #CIBCRunForTheCure, she actively works to spread her hope with those around her.
September 17 marks the Canadian Cancer Society’s first ever #WheelsOfHopeDay! It takes a society of amazing volunteer drivers, donors, community partners, and staff who together make our transportation program possible. 🚗💛 Everyday we’re able to help people facing cancer get to and from their cancer treatment appointments. We remove barriers and provide comfort during a difficult time. In 2024: 🚗 Over 150,000 rides were provided through our volunteer driving program ✈️ More than 350 flights were provided through Air Daffodil 💸 Over 4,000 people received travel treatment funding We are deeply grateful to everyone who helps us bring hope and care to Canadians affected by cancer. Want to get involved? 💛 Tag us in your favourite Wheels of Hope photos or videos using #WheelsOfHopeDay 💛 Apply to be a volunteer driver https://lnkd.in/eP2DvmDz

As we ease into the fall season, we’re taking a moment to look back at the sunshine, laughter and connection that filled CCS offices across the country this summer. From BBQs and ice cream socials to lawn games and team bonding, these celebrations brought joy to our workplaces.

We are celebrating 40 amazing years of Camp Goodtimes – where kids with cancer get to experience the joy of just being kids.🏕️ In 1985, a group of volunteers launched a medically supervised summer camp program for children affected by cancer. The inspiration for the camp came from Lois Youngston, a longtime Canadian Cancer Society volunteer, whose son had been diagnosed with cancer. The goal was to provide an environment for children affected by cancer to have fun, without sacrificing access to proper medical care. Now, Camp Goodtimes is celebrating its 40th year, and has programs in British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and is attended by hundreds of children, families and volunteers every year. We are excited to share that Rob Cunningham, Senior Advocacy Advisor at CCS, has received the Luther L. Terry Distinguished Career Award. This prestigious honour was presented to Rob in June at the World Conference on Tobacco Control in Dublin, Ireland. Rob has worked in commercial tobacco control advocacy for 37 years and has been instrumental in pushing for significant policy wins in Canada, some of which have been adopted by other countries. These include the development and adoption of plain packaging, pictorial health warnings and most recently, warnings included on individual cigarettes. Since Canada adopted pictorial warnings in 1991, 138 countries have followed our lead, implementing this effective method to help reduce commercial tobacco use. As we celebrate this remarkable achievement, we also reaffirm our shared commitment to working with all levels of government to strengthen commercial tobacco control policies that help prevent cancer and protect public health. Congratulations, Rob, on this incredible milestone. It is a privilege to work alongside you!
That’s a wrap for Relay for Life Youth! 🎉 2025 was a record-breaking year in the Relay for Life Youth program's 24-year history, with over 250 events at elementary schools, high schools and post-secondary schools across the country. A big thank you to all the youth leaders across Canada for leading, participating and making such an incredible impact! We couldn’t do it without you. Thanks to support from Desjardins and from youth leaders, Relay for Life Youth continues to make a difference in the lives of people living with cancer. Nothing big gets solved by one person. To take on cancer, it takes all of us. It takes a society. 💛
