AtkinsRéalis, through Candu Energy Inc., has signed a $450 million execution contract with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for the first of four planned small modular reactor units at the Darlington New Nuclear Project. This milestone marks Canada’s first new nuclear build in nearly 30 years and the G7’s first grid-scale SMR. Once complete, the 300-megawatt unit will provide enough clean electricity to power 300,000 homes. AtkinsRéalis is delivering full-scope engineering and project support, drawing on decades of experience in nuclear energy and a strong partnership with OPG. This work builds on our role in the successful Darlington Refurbishment Project and reflects our ongoing commitment to reliable, low-carbon energy. As power demand accelerates, projects like this are essential to helping communities meet growing energy needs while supporting a more sustainable future.
AtkinsRéalis is proud to announce that it has been awarded a seven-year contract by Rio Tinto for the refurbishment of the Isle-Maligne hydropower plant in Alma, Quebec. Commissioned in 1926 as the world's largest hydropower plant, Isle-Maligne is set to undergo a comprehensive refurbishment. Our cross-regional teams will use cutting-edge technologies and best practices to replace eight of the 12 turbine-alternator groups and upgrade corresponding water passages, along with the architectural, structural, electrical, and mechanical elements of the balance of the plant. We will provide execution engineering, integrated procurement, and construction management services to extend the hydropower plant’s operational life for decades to come. Through our joint venture Rail Connect Partners with Bird Construction, we have signed a project alliance agreement with Metrolinx to deliver the East Harbour Transit Hub in the City of Toronto. This transformative project will enhance regional connectivity and serve approximately 100,000 daily riders. The East Harbour Transit Hub Alliance will connect the Riverdale, Riverside, and Leslieville communities to the Lakeshore East and Stouffville GO lines, the future Ontario Line, and a future TTC streetcar extension. This project is part of a broader transit-oriented community plan for Toronto’s eastern-end waterfront, aiming to improve transportation choices and reduce commute times. We are proud to be part of one of Canada’s first major transit projects using an alliance contracting model, which offers significant risk and reward sharing benefits. Our team will manage the rail corridor and bridge widening, station works, and associated infrastructure, ensuring minimal impact on GO Transit services.
