Last week we welcomed retired Army Major General William Chen, the first 2-star general of Chinese descent in the U.S. Army, to our employee event in celebration of #AAPIHeritageMonth. He took us through the three generations of his family, who like many other Asian Americans have helped to build and serve the United States despite adversity and discrimination over the past 150 years. Throughout the month of May, we celebrate #AAPIHeritageMonth and the contributions of Asian Americans.
The devastating impact of the pandemic, along with so many challenging events that have taken place over the past year, have tested us all. While our global team has come together to support each other and share our humanity, we realize that sometimes that is not enough. We’re providing employees with events and resources to encourage making time to rest, reflect and recharge this #MentalHealthMonth, from guided meditations and yoga to virtual seminars on finding and maintaining balance.
Last week, we celebrated our winning team in style with our second annual Global Employee Forum. One of the biggest highlights of the session was the surprise introduction of basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson for a coffee chat with our CEO Roy Gori. Magic and Roy discussed Magic’s role models growing up in Lansing, Michigan, his rivalry with Larry Bird, and how he made the transition from super star on the court to successful CEO in the business world. It truly was a must-see event!
We were delighted to bring together our 37,000+ Manulife colleagues from all over the world for our second annual Global Employee Forum. We celebrated our winning team, shared progress on our company’s transformation journey, and enjoyed plenty of entertainment along the way. The session featured a keynote from our CEO Roy Gori, a very special guest, an Ask Me Anything session with our Executive Leadership Team and some fun employee-generated videos. Our Global Employee Forum epitomized the togetherness and team spirit that defines our culture and drives us to make every day better for each other and our 30 million customers around the world.

Following International Women's Day, we wanted to showcase our co-chairs for the Global Women’s Alliance (GWA) Indonesia, Caroline and Linawati. Their goal is to provide support to female employees, not only throughout their careers but also in balancing various priorities at work and at home. They provide regular events every month with different topics such as leadership, communication, networking, health and family. We asked our co-chairs what the most fulfilling event they’ve worked on is and why. “During 2020 we were able to still conduct many events including hosting some amazing guest speakers. We were able to invite Fifi Aleyda, a national TV news broadcaster, to share her expertise on best practices for strong communication and networking. She shared an abundance of important tips and useful information to improve our communication skills. Moreover, we also hosted Sachin Shah, General Manager of Emerging Markets in Asia, to talk about leadership. Sachin outlined his view on leadership and the importance of networking, especially during COVID-19.”
Happy #InternationalWomensDay! A time to celebrate the incredible women leaders and colleagues across Manulife who inspire, influence and impact our organization every day. Year-round, we continue to work towards creating an inclusive and equitable organization for everyone. #ChoosetoChallenge #IWD2021
