It's #BlackHistoryMonth, a time to celebrate Black culture and the achievements of the Black community, while recognizing the barriers faced to get there. As a company, we are dedicated to continuously making strides towards our goals for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). In the past year, we announced our goals to increase BIPOC recruitment and leadership representation, signed two pledges – the The BlackNorth Initiative in Canada and the CEO For Action in the US – and kicked off the 14th year of the MLK Scholars program. This month we will be highlighting Black employees who exemplify leadership towards our DEI mission and reflect on Black leaders who made history at our company. Meet Susana and York, our co-chairs of the Pan-Asian Community for Employee Success (PACES) in the United States. Having representation in the U.S. has been especially important for PACES this year. It helps to address the needs of Asian American employees who are facing challenges such as xenophobia, unconscious bias, stereotypes and the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes. We asked Susana and York about what made them want to become chair leads for PACES. “Being an immigrant and a woman of Asian descent; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are dear to my heart. I’ve experienced entering a financial career at an inherent disadvantage and feel that we need to make a place at the table for Asian representation, particularly at the senior leadership levels.” – Susana Ngan “I have been very fortunate to have mentors and sponsors throughout my career, and I understand the importance of allyship. I am happy that we can have a forum to promote factors that enable Asian employees to succeed and advance in the organization.” – York Lo

As we continue to recognize the sacrifices made by our veterans and those who have perished, we want to showcase the work of our Military Employee community (MiLE). MiLE is a group for our current service members, veterans, their families and supporters. Their goal is to create a community where veterans and military family members feel welcome. They look to highlight the unique experiences of our veterans and their family members, and give back to the local and veteran communities through volunteering and mentorship.
Meet Tanya and Adrianna, our Indigenous Peoples and Their Allies (IPTA) co-chairs from Waterloo, Canada. IPTA’s mission is to better enable our Indigenous employees to advance professionally and have open and honest conversations while increasing the awareness of Indigenous peoples for all employees. “IPTA is great due to it being for Indigenous employees and allies. It is the first of its kind at Manulife/John Hancock. It is a safe space to share information regarding what it is like being Indigenous and for Indigenous allies to ask questions they may not have felt comfortable going elsewhere to ask.”
Our largest Employee Resource Group is the Global Women’s Alliance (GWA). With members across 8 countries, the GWA provides resources and opportunities for women to grow their skills, share experiences, and build their professional networks. Meet Sören and Stef, our co-chairs for Professionals Reaching Out for Unity and Diversity (PROUD) Hong Kong. We asked them what PROUD is all about: “PROUD Hong Kong is committed to building a more inclusive environment for employees that identify as LGBTQ+ and our PROUD allies, many of whom have family, friends and colleagues who identify as LGBTQ+. Through our activities and campaigns, we increase awareness and create a sense of community and mutual support. While we are less than three years old, our efforts were rewarded in July 2020 when we were named a finalist of Community Business 2020 Hong Kong LGBTQ+ Inclusion Awards in the best newcomer category. Over the past year we have increasingly sought to raise Manulife’s external profile through sponsorships of high-profile events such as PRIDE and community awards as well as joining and promoting key initiatives such as the Interbank LGBTQ+ Forum, where Manulife became the first insurance company to be represented.”
